Gary M. Burge, "A Specific Problem in the New Testament Text and Canon: The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 7:53-8:11),"
____JETS 27 (1984): 141-148.

Burge surveys the relevant manuscript evidence and concludes that the story of the woman caught in adultery does not belong to the original fourth gospel. Burge further surveys the semantics of the narrative and concludes that it is not even Johannine. That said, Burge concludes that it the story is 1) historical; 2) belongs to the earliest (eye-witness?) strata of material from which the synoptic gospels were composed; 3) achieved its final form in the apostolic generation; and 4) was not used extensively by second- and third-century patristics because of their vehement position against sexual sins.

Well-researched, well-written, reasonable conclusions. Gives rise to some critical event or text questions.
