Homer Heater Jr., "Matthew 2:6 and its Old Testament Sources," JETS 26 (1983): 395-397.
Against Silva's dismissive "history of midrash" interpretation, Heater contends that Matthew endorses the scribes' exegesis of Bethlehem to Herod. The scribes are not "quoting" Mic 5:2, but providing a kind of "cumulative exegesis" from at least three Old Testament passages (Gen 49.10; 2 Sam 5.2; and Mic 5.2).
