Elizabeth Struthers Malbon, "The Jesus of Mark and the Sea of Galilee," JBL 103 (1984): 363-377.

Malbon observest that Mark uses the opposition of land and sea in a metaphorical way. The sea-barrier is no obstacle for Jesus; He crosses it easily. Furthermore, in Jesus' uses of "sea" at 9:42 and 11:23, the destructive power of the sea is made to serve to the purposes of believers (the gospel?). Very readable and well-argued in typical Malbon style.
